Which Vocational Career Requires the Most Schooling or Training?

As with many things in life, the sky is the limit; especially when it comes to the level of schooling or training you can attain in your lifetime. There is always more training available for those wanting more experience to further their career and become a more skilled worker. Here are the minimum requirements to be competitive in these careers:
  • Plumber: Apprenticeship program (4-5 years) and additional training in a career/technical school or community college
  • Electrician: Apprenticeship program usually lasting 4 years
  • Automotive technician: Formal automotive technician training (6 months-2 years)
  • Welder: Training ranges from a few weeks to several years of school as well as on-the-job training

Which Vocational Career Has the Highest Expected Job Growth?

Job growth outlook projections provided are for the 2008-2018 decade and are supplied by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
  • Plumber: 16 percent; faster than the average for all occupations
  • Electrician: 12 percent; about as fast as the average
  • Automotive technician: 5 percent; slower than the average
  • Welder: Little or no change
