  • Employment of occupational therapists is expected to increase by 26 percent between 2008 and 2018.
  • Median annual wage was $66,780 in 2008.

Health Care: Dental Assisting

Dental assistants work along side a dentist and do a wide range of duties. A 36 percent increase in employment is expected in this profession over the next eight years.
  • Many assistants learn their skills on the job or are trained in dental-assisting programs
  • Most dental assisting programs take one year or less to complete
  • Median annual wage in 2008 was $32,380

Health Care: Medical Transcription

A career as a medical transcriptionist entails listening to dictated recordings made by physicians or other health care professionals and transcribing them for use in health records.
  • Job growth is projected to increase by 11 percent by 2018
  • Post-secondary training or certification improves competitiveness for job openings
  • Many medical transcriptionists telecommute from home-based offices.
  • Median hourly wage (2008) was $15.41
