Art and Design Schools - Programs and Training

Were you one of those kids who excelled in art class but didn't care about anything else? Are you working a lame job that pays the bills but leaves you feeling empty and searching? Did you know there's a plethora of art and design careers to choose from, no matter your specialty?
  • Photography: How many photographs have you seen in the last week? Someone took each of those. With a good eye and a bit of training, you can become a professional photographer
  • Graphic Design: Whether for entertainment or advertising, a photography career can open doors to graphic art and design professions.
  • Fashion Marketing: Stylish? Fashionable? Take photos of models and the latest clothing lines for magazine spreads and Web page features.

Drawing: Drafting and CAD

Whether you're into drawing cartoons and animation, or if you're more into the art of architecture and the interior design of rooms, and always find yourself doodling and drawing skyscrapers, you can look into an architecture school with courses in drafting and CAD (computer-aided design).

Drafters create technical drawings and blueprints for projects ranging from microprocessors to space stations, which are used by construction crews to build. They often use computer programs to ensure precision.

Though attending art and design school is not always required for a drafting and CAD career, employers look favorably upon applicants with post-secondary training, whether in a university, community college, or trade school. Drafters earned a median annual wage of $44,490 in 2008, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Though many art and design professions do not require a degree from a specific art and design school, formal training can help you learn specific details, histories, and techniques, as well as provide an opportunity to receive valuable feedback and experience.

It's time to take your creative genius and put it to good use. Pick your art and design a program of study for yourself. There's no time like the present.
